Details : Residents of Kstovo reported hearing explosions on the night of 3-4 November. Videos showed a bright glow over the city and a fire that broke out after the attack.
Astra reported that it had analysed the footage and concluded that the photos were taken from the village of Novolikeevo. The fire started in the south-eastern part of the industrial zone, where two oil facilities – SIBUR-Kstovo and Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez – are located in close proximity to one another.
The SIBUR-Kstovo petrochemical plant, according to its website, produces ethylene, propylene, benzene and several hydrocarbon fractions. However, Ukrainian media outlets have reported that it also manufactures components used in explosives.
Media sources also noted that Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez is one of Russia's leading oil refineries. It plays a key role in supplying Moscow Oblast, which accounts for around 30% of the country's petrol consumption. Fuel from the Nizhny Novgorod refinery was delivered to Moscow via a pipeline. The refinery's primary oil processing capacity is about 17 million tonnes per year. The plant produces more than 50 types of products, including automotive, aviation and diesel fuels as well as bitumen and paraffin.
