Reuters reported the information, citing two people directly familiar with the matter and several industry sources.Turkey is one of Russia’s main oil buyers, along with China and India. Turkish refineries are now taking measures similar to those in India, reflecting the impact of U.S., EU, and UK efforts to limit Russian oil sales. One of Turkey’s largest refineries, SOCAR Turkey Aegean Refinery (STAR), owned by Azerbaijani company SOCAR, recently purchased four shipments of oil from Iraq, Kazakhstan, and other non-Russian producers for December delivery, sources said.According to Reuters calculations, this amounts to 77,000–129,000 barrels per day of non-Russian supplies, meaning SOCAR will use less Russian oil.Data from Kpler show that Russian oil accounted for nearly all supplies to STAR in October and September, around 210,000 barrels per day.Another major Turkish refinery, Tupras, is increasing purchases of non-Russian grades similar in quality to Russia’s Urals, such as Iraqi varieties, two sources said without giving further details.Tupras, which owns two major refineries in Turkey, is also likely to soon fully stop importing Russian oil at one refinery to continue exporting fuel to Europe without violating new EU sanctions, sources said. They added that the company will continue processing Russian oil at its other refinery. On September 25, U.S. President Donald Trump, during a meeting with Turkish leader Recep Erdoğan, stated that he would like Ankara to stop purchasing Russian oil.
