Quote: "We are strengthening Ukraine's air defence to protect its civilians and its energy infrastructure. I announce today that we are accelerating our UK programme to provide Ukraine with more than 5,000 Lightweight Multirole Missiles."
Details: Starmer said the programme has created hundreds of jobs in Belfast and they are working on producing a further 140 missiles to help Ukraine through the difficult winter.
He added that by the end of the year the Coalition of the Willing is determined to take further action aimed at removing Russian oil and gas from the global market. Starmer said that the United States has "acted decisively" with its sanctions and called on others to take these steps.
The UK prime minister also expects progress on Russia's sovereign assets and the unlocking of billions that will help finance Ukraine's defence.
In addition, he called for increased military pressure on Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin through the continued provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.
Background:
- It was reported in the spring that Ukraine would receive over 5,000 RapidRanger LMM interceptor missiles and launch systems for them.
- The most recent Coalition of the Willing meeting, held in early September, brought together representatives of more than 30 countries across Europe and beyond.
