Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has expressed delight that the US and Russian leaders have agreed to hold a meeting in Budapest.

Details: Orbán said the upcoming meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin is "great news for the peace-loving people of the world".

"We are ready!" the Hungarian prime minister added.

Background:

• Following his first phone conversation with Putin in two months on Thursday, the US president announced plans for a meeting in Budapest.
• This will be the second face-to-face meeting between the US and Russian leaders, following their first on 15 August 2025 in Anchorage, Alaska.
• Since the Alaska summit, Trump has become increasingly critical of Putin for his refusal to end the war against Ukraine, whereas dialogue between Kyiv and Washington has improved.
