Ukraine investigates Russia's execution of 322 POWs

The Prosecutor General's Office stated this in response to a query from Ukrinform media.Currently, 80 criminal proceedings have been initiated. Based on the investigation results, nine Russian military personnel have been declared suspects. Indictments against six of them have already been sent to court. Two verdicts have been issued in these cases, and two more are under consideration.Olenivka terrorist actOn the night of July 29, 2022, explosions occurred in the colony in the occupied town of Olenivka, Donetsk region, where Russians were holding Ukrainian prisoners of war from Azovstal.According to the Prosecutor General's Office, the explosions occurred after lights out—between 11:00 p.m. on July 28 and 1:00 a.m. on July 29, 2022. At that time, 193 prisoners of war from the Azov regiment were held in the barracks.So far, 49 deceased servicemen have been identified, 48 of them through forensic molecular genetic examinations, and one other deceased individual through the testimony of victims and witnesses.Despite the fact that Ukrainian servicemen in captivity are protected by the Geneva Convention, the Russians did not allow international organizations to inspect the scene. Instead, they attempted to destroy and conceal traces of the crime."This is the first result of the investigation into the mass murder of Ukrainian prisoners of war in Olenivka. None of those involved will go unpunished," the Prosecutor's General Office stated.
