Aviation expert and leading researcher at the State Aviation Museum Valerii Romanenko spoke about this on Espreso TV.“Tomahawk is a conventional cruise missile. No miracles. It has three guidance systems. The Tomahawk is practically the same as the Taurus, but with a greater strike range and can be fitted with a nuclear warhead. Of course, if Ukraine receives these missiles, it would be the high‑explosive‑fragmentation warhead variant. The Tomahawk, as an ordinary cruise missile, can be shot down. MiG‑31 fighters were specially deployed in northern Russia to shoot down those missiles that would fly from the US over the North Pole,” Romanenko explained. The expert stressed that the Tomahawk, like other cruise missiles, can be shot down. The Tomahawk is very accurate, but it lacks complex navigation and guidance systems."If Ukraine does receive Tomahawk missiles, the most important factor will not be the modification but the number of missiles we get. Because Ukraine can shoot down Russian missiles — sometimes 9 out of 10, sometimes all of them. During one of the strikes on Ukraine, our forces managed to shoot down 8 out of 8 Russian cruise missiles. Indeed, this missile is very accurate, but all cruise missiles have a terminal guidance system and complex navigation systems. So there is nothing particularly complicated or special about this missile," he added.Alongside the well‑known Tomahawk, the American company Anduril’s Barracuda family is being discussed as a possible long‑range option for Ukraine. The system has promise — but also two critical drawbacks that limit its utility.
