Political consultant and foreign policy expert Hlib Ostapenko said this on Espreso TV.“If we speak specifically about the negotiations and Trump’s shift in rhetoric and position, it’s absolutely clear that our negotiation team—Volodymyr Zelenskyy and others—had a real impact. Clear messages were conveyed. I think that after the Alaska meeting, Trump, let’s say, mildly understood that Putin was trying to feed him narratives that were convenient for Moscow. But as we can see, Trump’s position—whichever side it may be influenced by—is very easy to sway,” Ostapenko said.He noted that Alaska brought one position, the meeting with Zelenskyy another, then in two weeks there may be yet another, and in a month something else again.“This is quite chaotic compared to earlier American politics, which in the 2000s and 2010s looked gradual and systematic, with an understood grand strategy. Now it’s more like statements that yesterday indeed sounded like a breakthrough. I honestly watched them, I was glad, I was satisfied reading this news. But overall, Ukrainian society has sobered up during these seven or eight months of Trump’s presidency,” the expert added. He stressed that any statements with strong symbolic impact must be reinforced with concrete, comprehensive actions.“These real actions can only come as part of a package: diplomatic pressure, financial and sanctions pressure, military pressure, and united pressure from Europe, the United States, and Ukraine. Until that happens, any statements and any meetings in Alaska, Geneva, Washington, or Kyiv will not bring real results,” Ostapenko concluded.Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump, after meeting the Ukrainian leader in New York, said Russia resembled a “paper tiger” and that Ukraine was capable of regaining its territory “in its original form” with EU support, and “even go further.”“After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia military and economic situation and, after seeing the economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form ,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was “somewhat surprised” by the remarks. He stressed that, in this way, Trump showed he wanted to support Ukraine to the very end.
