Ukraine seeks to address UN Security Council over Russia’s airspace violations

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha made the statement on X.The session was requested by Estonia after three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets crossed into its airspace over the Gulf of Finland on Friday, remaining for about 12 minutes before being intercepted by NATO aircraft. It is the first time in 34 years that Estonia has called such a meeting.Sybiha said Kyiv had asked South Korea, which currently holds the council presidency, to allow Ukraine to present its position. “We support friendly Estonia in calling for a strong and united response to Russia’s continued destabilization of international peace and security,” he wrote on X.Tensions in the Baltic Sea region have escalated in recent days following multiple incidents involving Russian military aircraft. On Friday, three Russian MiG-31 interceptors entered Estonian airspace for about 12 minutes, while Poland reported that two Russian planes flew low over the Petrobaltic drilling platform, violating its security zone.In response, Estonia requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, scheduled for Monday, September 22, to address Russia’s airspace violations.
