American diplomat William Taylor, former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, shared his opinions in an interview with Anton Borkovskyi on Studio West program on Espreso TV.“The conclusions we can draw from those attacks, from those incursions, from those 19 or 20 drones that entered Polish territory, is that Putin is testing NATO. Putin wants to know how we, the Poles, the rest of Europe, and the United States would defend ourselves from these kinds of attacks if they were larger and more lethal. Putin was probing to see what kind of military response there would be to these incursions and also what kind of political response he would face,” Taylor said. The diplomat criticized the military response as disproportionate. NATO allies, including Poland, the Netherlands, and Germany, deployed expensive weapons, aircraft, and missiles to defend against drones that were far cheaper to produce. “That is a weakness, a real weakness,” he added."The Ukrainians know how to defend themselves from these drones. They shoot down 70, 80, sometimes 90 percent of the drones that come into their airspace with relatively cheap weapons, sometimes machine guns, sometimes shotguns, but always with weapons that are much cheaper and more effective than what the Europeans used. We have a lot to learn from the Ukrainians. The Ukrainians have much to teach us, both in terms of technologies and in terms of tactics, on how to defend against these drones. I think that is going to be important going forward," Taylor commented. The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces placed air defense and aviation units on high alert following Russia’s night attack on Ukraine on September 10, during which Russian drones entered Polish airspace. Reports indicate that more than 20 UAVs were involved. In a village in Poland’s Lublin Province, debris from one drone fell on a house, though no injuries were reported.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the violation of Poland’s airspace by Russian drones, calling it a dangerous precedent for all of Europe. On Wednesday, September 10, NATO activated Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty after Russian drones violated Polish territory.
