Latvia arrests man suspected of spying on military bases for Russia

Delfi reported the information.The suspect is a Latvian citizen and was detained on August 27.According to the investigation, the detainee also provided information about the construction of new military facilities, the training of military personnel, and the presence of soldiers from other NATO countries at specific Latvian military facilities.As noted by the Latvian special service, there is evidence that the man also passed other information to Russian intelligence that could be used against the security interests of Latvia and other countries in the Baltic region.Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the detainee under Part 1 of Article 85 of the Latvian Criminal Law—for the illegal collection and transfer of information to a foreign intelligence service on its orders.The State Security Service conducted searches at four properties associated with the suspect in Riga and its surroundings. Currently, the agency's officers are conducting an in-depth investigation of the data carriers and documents seized during the searches. The suspect has been placed under arrest as a preventive measure.In early September, a Belarusian spy was arrested in Poland. Warsaw also expelled a diplomat who "supported the aggressive actions" of Minsk against the country.
