Oleh Katkov, Ukrainian military expert and Defense Express editor-in-chief, shared the information on Espreso TV.“When discussing Rheinmetall’s Skyranger anti-drone systems, it’s important to consider not just the weapon itself but also the number of units. Currently, the number planned for transfer to Ukraine is unknown. The agreement is expected to be signed soon. Rheinmetall has only partially disclosed the contract details; price and quantity will depend on the final terms.Regarding Ukraine, it already has Skyranger systems — specifically the mobile Skynex version. These are essentially identical systems, but Skyranger will be mounted on either a Boxer or Leopard 1 chassis; the final choice has not yet been confirmed,” Katkov explained.According to Katkov, Skyranger is the most advanced anti-aircraft system, using programmable detonation, which allows ammunition to explode precisely in front of a target. In practice, this is extremely challenging, as it requires nanosecond-level precision. The process works as follows: the distance to the target is measured, a shot is fired, its speed is tracked as it leaves the muzzle device, and the detonation timing is set so that the round explodes just in front of the drone.“This ammunition can engage not only Shahed drones or other UAVs but also cruise missiles. Our Air Force has already demonstrated the Skynex platform, which integrates a combat module. Effective hits are often achieved with the first, second, or third shot, though the standard salvo is 10 rounds per target. The system is highly effective, repeatedly tested in combat conditions, and there is a strong interest in increasing the number of units. The fact that it is manufactured in Europe is particularly positive, as European partners are committed to consistently supplying Ukraine with proven, operational systems,” Katkov noted.German defense manufacturer Rheinmetall will produce Skyranger mobile anti-drone systems for Ukraine, with the first deliveries expected later this year.
