Volodymyr Omelchenko, Director of Energy Programs at the Oleksandr Razumkov Center for Economic and Political Studies, shared his opinions on Espreso TV.“I think this is another trap by Putin, because, first, none of his words can be trusted, and second, what does ‘the three of us’ even mean? Legally, the station is Ukrainian. There are three resolutions by the IAEA Board of Governors demanding that all Russians leave the station, that all unnecessary personnel and military units be removed, and that the station be immediately handed over to Ukraine. That is the correct path. And what do the Russians want? They want us to agree to legalize the station under their control, so they can supply the Zaporizhzhia NPP with electricity from their own territory. They would cut off the lines currently supplying us with power through shelling. Then the station would be entirely dependent on Russia,” he said.Volodymyr Omelchenko noted that, in that scenario, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant would be fully dependent on Russia.“They would then operate one or two reactors, create a dangerous operating mode, and begin to blackmail Ukraine and all of Europe with a nuclear threat. These are their plans. We must under no circumstances fall into this trap. They would give us nothing, no electricity at all. It’s simply a lie,” emphasized the energy expert. On September 2, Russian leader Vladimir Putin said he is open to the possibility of cooperation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in a trilateral format involving the U.S. and Ukraine.
