Ukrainian Navy Captain Andriy Ryzhnenko stated this on Espreso TV."Information indicated that the Main Intelligence Directorate was involved; most likely those were FPV drones, and the strikes were carried out by drones, because this missile (Flamingo — ed.) has a very powerful warhead. And I think it makes no sense to use it against two helicopters. As for FPV drones, we are now observing a very positive dynamic for us: FPV drones are gradually spreading more and more, both in the territories occupied within our state and within the Russian Federation. Recently there were such strikes on ships in the Azov Sea; now we are seeing strikes on the RT-70 radio telescope, which is located near the city of Yevpatoria. And in principle it provides functionality for the Russian Federation’s satellite constellation. That is, all those spy satellites that are in space are controlled, among other things, by that antenna. It was under Ukraine’s control for a long time. And then, as I understand it, Ukraine did not have a need for it at that time, but kept personnel so that it would operate in the Russian Federation," he said. After the Russian forces occupied Crimea, they have been using this radio telescope: "But until yesterday, when the security forces at least seriously damaged this facility."Regarding the helicopters, they were located near Simferopol: "The helicopters were at the Hvardiiske airfield; it is located near Simferopol. There is aviation there, there are helicopters and damaged Mi-8 helicopters — this is the most common helicopter; it is used both for transport and for fire support. So the fact that these helicopters have been put out of action, at minimum, positively affects the fact that they simply will not deliver fire damage or land enemy assault troops in southern Ukraine where they are used.""There was also information about a damaged tug named Buk. This is a fairly new vessel, late 2017, which is new for the Russian Federation — not many are built there — but this ship was built only a few years ago when it entered the auxiliary forces of the Black Sea Fleet. And now it has been hit. Interestingly, it was built in Saint Petersburg, by the way, under a Canadian license. This also affects combat capability because it can be used for search-and-rescue work of the Black Sea Fleet, for diving operations and other measures that require assistance. The security and defense forces are deliberately working on such key objects in Crimea — in military terms, these are called the enemy’s centers of gravity — which ensure its critical strength. This is effective at the tactical, operational, and perhaps even strategic level, because that RT-70 antenna had strategic significance. Russian satellites provide, among other things, the functioning of the Russian satellite navigation system called GLONASS, which is used by missiles such as the Kh-101 and the Kalibr and others to correct their flight when they are heading to targets in Ukraine," Andriy Ryzhnenko added. On Monday, September 1, Ukrainian fighters launched a drone strike on a Russian airbase in the temporarily annexed Crimea, hitting two Mi-8 helicopters and a vessel.
