The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reports that Russian special services may be involved in the murder of People’s Deputy Andriy Parubiy. Officials from the SBU, National Police, and Prosecutor General’s Office said they obtained the information during initial investigative and operational measures with the detained killer."The crime has signs of being a contract killing. There is operational information indicating the possible involvement of the Russian Federation's special services in organizing the murder. We are working with our law enforcement colleagues to identify all those involved in this brazen crime, confirm the sources of information, and gather evidence," Vadym Onyshchenko, head of the SBU department in Lviv region, said.Earlier, at a briefing on the investigation into Andriy Parubiy’s murder, Deputy Head of the National Police and Chief of the Criminal Police Andriy Niebytov said that several investigative teams are working on the case, each considering different versions."We are studying all motives; we are not discarding any of the versions," he clarified. The deputy head of the National Police noted that investigators do not rule out that Russia may have been involved in Andriy Parubiy’s murder."Today we can say that the person had intent to commit murder. We do not rule out that this was a Russian trace, that it was ordered by the Russian Federation," Andriy Niebytov emphasized. Many details, including allegations of blackmail by Russian special services, cannot be disclosed at this time, investigators said. The Prosecutor General’s Office will request pretrial detention for the 52-year-old suspect from Lviv, without the option of bail. He had no steady employment and was not working as a delivery-service courier.Earlier, the Prosecutor General’s Office posted on Telegram that Mykola Meret, head of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, personally signed the notice of suspicion against the suspect in the murder of public-political figure and Member of Parliament Andriy Parubiy.According to Meret, "the suspicion is based on objective evidence indicating that the detained person committed the murder of the Member of Parliament."His actions have been charged under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Part 1 of Article 115 (intentional murder) and Part 1 of Article 263 (illegal handling of weapons).Investigative actions with the suspect are ongoing, as are searches of his places of residence and whereabouts. In addition, a motion is being prepared for the court to impose pretrial detention without the possibility of bail.Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko reported the arrest of the suspect in Parubiy’s murder."Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko and head of the Security Service Vasyl Maliuk have just reported the detention of the suspect in the murder of Andriy Parubiy. All circumstances of this horrific murder must be clarified," Zelenskyy concluded.Statement of the National PoliceOn the morning of 1 September, law enforcement released photos of the arrest of the suspect in Parubiy’s murder. According to the police, the perpetrator had long planned the crime and had been surveilling the MP."On 30 August, in the Sykhivskyi district of Lviv, he disguised himself as a courier and opened fire on the politician in broad daylight. Eight shots. Cold-blooded brutality. He even made sure the victim was dead. Afterwards he tried to cover his tracks — changed clothes, discarded the weapon, and attempted to hide in the Khmelnytskyi region. But he failed to escape. Around-the-clock work by the Lviv police and the central apparatus of the National Police yielded results — the brazen killer has been detained and the necessary evidence gathered. We know: this crime is not random. There is a Russian trace. Everyone will be held accountable under the law," informed National Police head Ivan Vyhivskyi.
