Journalist Vitaly Portnikov shared his opinions with Espreso TV."I think Poland could at least shoot down Russian missiles and drones together with Ukraine's air defense. Simply help the Ukrainian system destroy what is near Poland, not only over Polish territory but also in Ukraine's airspace. To declare, for example, some part of Ukraine's airspace as an area critical to Poland's own security," he said.Portnikov said he does not understand why this cannot be done."And if the Polish air defense shoots down a Russian cruise missile somewhere over the Yavoriv training ground or over Rava-Ruska, somewhere in those areas. What, the Russians will bomb Warsaw? I'm curious. This is not some, excuse me, manned plane, right? A plane with a pilot dropping bombs. None of that. It's a rocket, drones, no people. Why can’t Russian missiles be shot down? What are these, some icons? Something sacred? I don’t see the logic. A Polish missile shot down a Russian missile – one piece of junk took down another," the journalist stressed. He added that no Russian citizen would be harmed in such a case."I'm not even calling for shooting down Russian planes with Russian pilots, who, as you know, launch missiles from Russian airspace. Not from Ukraine’s at all. They launch them from Engels or elsewhere. None of them appear in Ukraine or Poland as pilots. Why can't these missiles be shot down?" Portnikov noted. The journalist said he does not understand why this is seen as NATO’s direct participation in the war."I don’t understand. Why is it considered legitimate for Russia to fire missiles into Ukraine’s airspace, against a country it hasn’t even declared war on? This is madness. I believe NATO members could have done this calmly long ago," he said.He recalled that Israel’s neighbors once shot down missiles in their airspace that were heading for Israel."They just flew past them. Jordan, other countries. And these states are not allies of Israel like Poland or Romania are to us. They help us, they want us in NATO, we’re EU candidates. Jordan only has a peace treaty with Israel. They are, to put it mildly, not friends. But Jordan shot down Iranian missiles in its airspace, and not just Jordan. So, clearly it can be done. Did that mean Iran attacked Jordan or bombed it? Again, this is not taking down a plane with a pilot, some hero of Russia or Iran. This is just shooting down a piece of metal," Portnikov said.According to him, if this is not done, it only shows fear."This only fuels the Russians. They say: they’re so scared they won’t even touch our drone. Imagine how scared they’ll be when the first Russian tank shows up there. If they’re afraid of a missile. What does it matter that they have modern weapons, that the Americans supply everything, that there are U.S. bases there, if they’re simply scared. What’s the point of all this modernity if you don’t want to use it?" he concluded.
