Advisor to the EU and NATO Department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry (2019–2021), president of the Association of Reserve Officers and Veterans, and associate member of the Joint Confederation of Reserve Officers of NATO countries, Volodymyr Dzhydzhora, shared this on Espreso TV.“I read yesterday and today Trump's favorite outlet, Fox News. It basically lays out an almost step-by-step algorithm of what Trump needs to do. It clearly lists four positions that the U.S. plans to take at this meeting. The first position aligns with Ukraine's expectations and our goals, shared with our European NATO partners. The first point is an unconditional ceasefire. Yesterday, Trump emphasized this after contacts with our president and European partners during our president’s visit to Berlin — an unconditional ceasefire. No other negotiations or positions are expected, and I’m very glad this has been articulated by the American side. Trump didn’t phrase it exactly like this, but his spokesperson, who communicates his views and whom he listens to, clearly stated that it is an unconditional halt to fighting,” he said.Volodymyr Dzhydzhora noted that if this happens, it will be exactly what Ukraine expects, along with its European partners.“The second point is tough sanctions if Russia violates this unconditional ceasefire. This directly refers back to the first point, that no other agreements or negotiations can take place before the unconditional ceasefire. Again, this fully aligns with our goals and our shared European and NATO position. It is also encouraging that Trump himself said, he didn’t specify details, but he clearly emphasized, and we know he likes to do this dramatically, that Russia will face the most extraordinary sanctions if it does not accept his proposals. Translating this into standard diplomatic language: if Russia tries to deceive Trump personally and violates the unconditional ceasefire, sanctions will be imposed,” he said. The former advisor to the EU and NATO Department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also stressed that the report mentions security guarantees for Ukraine."The timing and details, again as conveyed by Trump’s spokesperson: peace talks involving Ukraine should begin just two days after the unconditional ceasefire is established. That means no other bilateral, separate, or formats excluding Ukraine regarding the cessation of the war itself — this is about ending the war, not just hostilities, and it must involve Ukraine. Trump himself emphasized in his statements yesterday, not Fox News, but Trump, that there can be no territorial discussions without Ukraine’s participation. And finally, what surprised me extremely positively is that this is already on Trump's table, and it has definitely been on the table of our European partners for a long time. Security guarantees. They are clearly stated, again. This is either NATO membership or some equivalent of guarantees that will be enforced," added Volodymyr Dzhydzhora. On August 14, U.S. President Donald Trump told European and Ukrainian leaders that the United States could provide security guarantees to Ukraine if these commitments were not realized within the framework of NATO.
