Diplomat Roman Bezsmertnyi shared his opinions on Espreso TV."Trump cannot create the conditions for an agreement with Putin for the simple reason that he does not understand or accept Putin's goals. He is far from realizing what he is dealing with. Instead of joining Europe in destroying this Russian obscurantism, Trump legalizes it, recognizes it as a subject of international law, and in fact revives a criminal offender. The issue is not the conditions Donald Trump creates, but the fact that Putin now wants to be with Trump or with some European politicians, because this legitimizes him," Roman Bezsmertnyi commented.According to him, there is no statute of limitations for the crimes Putin has committed; sooner or later he will be held accountable, despite Trump reviving him for a short time and possibly even returning him to some participation in international life, but this will be temporary.“Trump does not understand Putin’s goal, which is the destruction of the Ukrainian state, the Ukrainian ethnic group, and the Ukrainian nation. Any pause is merely a breather before the continuation of the war. Moreover, Putin’s plans extend far beyond Ukraine — to restoring Russia’s imperialist influence to the lines of 1991. We will still hear, both before and after Alaska, about the ‘elimination of root causes,’ which is just an informational pause used by Kremlin propagandists. Clearly, Trump does not understand this,” the diplomat noted. In his view, Trump and his team’s position is somewhat detached from reality, which is why they use terminology that, from the perspective of assessing the real situation, does not comply with international law, the UN Charter, the Helsinki Final Act, or the Constitution of Ukraine.“Any agreements must implement the principles of the Charter and ensure justice: Russian troops must leave the sovereign territory of Ukraine, those responsible must face trial, and restitution must be made for the victims of this war and the damage inflicted on Ukraine. Everything else is Trump’s empty rhetoric, which will lead to nothing positive in the current situation. Based on what I see now, it is clear that the efficiency of this meeting in Anchorage will be minimal, and may even be non-existent,” Bezsmertnyi concluded.Trump–Putin meeting: what is knowOn August 8, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine would involve some territorial exchanges.Later, the American president announced that he would meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, August 15.Before the Trump–Putin meeting, senior officials from the U.S., Ukraine, and European countries are expected to hold talks to coordinate joint positions. The media also reported that Volodymyr Zelenskyy might join the U.S. leader’s meeting with the Russian leader.
