Diplomat and former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ohryzko stated this on Espreso TV.He commented on the recent decrease in rhetoric around Ukraine joining the EU and NATO.“I would actually separate these two issues. The European Union process is moving forward. Despite Moscow’s allies in the EU — like Orbán — trying to throw every possible obstacle in our way, the process is moving, and I believe the EU has several options to ensure we don’t lose pace. And from what I know, that pace isn’t slowing down — we’re doing what’s needed,” Ohryzko said. The former minister added that the process could be faster.“On the other hand, we do have a force majeure situation. This isn’t an easy walk in the park when you’re at war. But I think things are generally clear, and the progress isn’t going anywhere,” the diplomat noted. He emphasized that the situation is different when it comes to NATO.“Look at what happened at the recent NATO commemorative summit in The Hague. It was basically a warm welcome for Trump — a royal reception, everyone praising him, no one wanting to object to anything, and so on. Against that backdrop, if we talked daily about Ukraine wanting to join NATO, knowing Trump’s specific stance, it would have a counterproductive effect,” the former minister added. He believes the government has finally grasped the right tone to use when advancing this issue.“We’re not shouting at every corner that Ukraine must join NATO tomorrow, but a real process of rapprochement is underway. And now it’s not just NATO teaching us — we’re teaching NATO as well. This is a concrete case where NATO is at least as interested in us as we are in NATO,” the diplomat said.According to Ohryzko, this is a key development that didn’t exist before.“There’s now truly mutually beneficial cooperation and growing closeness. As for Trump’s current stance — that’s possible too. But knowing Trump, it could just as well happen that in six months he’ll say, ‘No, I’ve changed my mind. Ukraine should be admitted to NATO immediately because it has the best army in the world, the best drone attack and defense system.’ All of that is entirely possible,” the former minister concluded.
