Ukrainian medic from Azov brigade wins top European military medicine award

This was reported by the 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine "Azov."A team of three medics from the 12th Special Purpose Brigade Azov participated in the 2025 Combat Medical Care Conference, the largest European military medicine conference, held in Germany. The event, co-organized by the Bundeswehr, brought together more than 1,400 leading experts from 44 countries.Special recognition was given to Volodymyr Ryzhenko (callsign Sprite), a combat medic with the 12th Azov Brigade, who was named Best European Medic of the Year in the "Military Medicine" category. He received the award for an extraordinary case in the winter of 2025, when he saved the life of a wounded comrade under extreme conditions by performing a blood transfusion using donor blood that had been delivered by drone.Along with the award, Sprite received a ceremonial sword — a symbol of strength, dignity, and courage. During his acceptance speech, he thanked his comrades who had helped carry out the rescue operation.
Azov representatives at the conference shared with the international community their unique experience of providing assistance in combat conditions. Senior Lieutenant Serhiy Rotchuk (Jedi) presented innovative approaches to medical logistics on the battlefield. And Olha Tahirova (Krava) spoke about the challenges of providing assistance outside the "golden hour" and the constant work on training personnel.
