Reuters reported the information.Bessent said at a press conference that he had warned Chinese officials about the risk of tariffs over continued Russian oil imports. He noted that a bill in the U.S. Congress would allow President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 500% on countries buying Russian oil. This, he said, would push U.S. allies to act against Russia’s energy revenue."So I think anyone who buys sanctioned Russian oil should be ready for this," Bessent said.According to him, Chinese officials replied that China is a sovereign state with its own energy needs and would base its oil purchases on domestic policy."The Chinese take their sovereignty very seriously. We don't want to impede on their sovereignty, so they'd like to pay a 100% tariff," the secretary said.Bessent also told Chinese officials that the U.S. is unhappy with China’s ongoing imports of sanctioned Iranian oil and its sale of more than $15 billion in dual-use goods to Russia, which have supported Moscow’s war on Ukraine."I pointed out to them that it is very much hurting their public perception in Europe that they are contributing to the war on the European border," Bessent added. On June 11, the U.S. and China reached a framework deal to resume a trade truce and ease export restrictions on rare earth elements. President Donald Trump later clarified the terms of the agreement.
