Reuters reported the development, citing intelligence assessments. In exchange for supplying military aid to Russia, North Korea is gaining access to advanced technologies—including satellite launch capabilities and missile guidance systems.South Korean lawmaker Lee Sung-kyun shared this assessment after a closed-door briefing with representatives from the National Intelligence Service (NIS). According to Lee, South Korean intelligence believes Russia is preparing for a major offensive on the Ukrainian front in August, and North Korean troops could be deployed in coordination with that phase of the war.North Korea has already launched a new wave of troop mobilization in preparation for potential involvement in the conflict. In May, a high-ranking official from Russia’s Security Council visited Pyongyang—a trip analysts view as part of the countries’ effort to align their military strategies.Beyond manpower, North Korea continues to supply Russia with ammunition, including artillery shells and missiles. In return, Pyongyang receives technical support to advance its missile and space programs. This level of cooperation became possible after the two countries signed a mutual defense pact in June 2024 during a summit between Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin at Russia’s Vostochny Cosmodrome. The growing strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea has sparked serious concern in the region. Senior officials from South Korea and the United States have strongly condemned Pyongyang’s potential involvement in the war against Ukraine, warning that it will only deepen North Korea’s international isolation and fuel further escalation of the armed conflict. On June 30, North Korea’s state television published photos of soldiers who fought on Russia’s side against Ukraine.
