EU voices concern over Ukraine’s raids on anti-corruption bodies

This statement came from European Commission spokesperson Guillaume Mercier, whose comments were shared with Ukrainian Pravda.Mercier emphasized that the EU is "concerned about Ukraine's recent actions with regard to its anti-corruption institutions, NABU and SAPO.""These institutions are crucial to Ukraine's reform agenda and must operate independently to fight corruption and maintain public trust," he said. Mercier also stressed that the EU provides Ukraine with significant financial aid contingent on progress in transparency, judicial reform, and democratic governance."Ukraine's EU accession will require a strong capacity to combat corruption and to ensure institutional resilience. The EU will continue to monitor the situation and support Ukraine in upholding the rule of law," the European Commission spokesperson added.On Monday morning, July 21, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) and Prosecutor General's Office launched a major op to root out Russian influence among National Anti-Corruption Bureau detectives across the country. They also raided the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office.NABU detectives face accusations of treason, illegal trade with Russia, and corruption benefiting oligarchs. Meanwhile, the State Bureau of Investigations has stepped up inquiries into multi-year-old traffic accident cases involving NABU staff.SBU and Prosecutor General’s Office officials are also reviewing how the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office handles state secrets protection.
