Ihor Semyvolos, Director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, stated this on Espreso TV.He commented on the security deal between Turkey and Azerbaijan."Look, the agreement is serious, but even within its framework, it’s unlikely that we will see Turkish troops fighting against Russia. However, the very fact of Turkish troops being present on the territory of Azerbaijan — if, let’s say, the agreement is implemented in full, including the creation of a Turkish military base — would already indicate that the situation has radically changed. The balance of power will have radically shifted," the expert said.Semyvolos added that no actual clashes with Russia would even be necessary."The mere presence of Turkish troops will be enough for Russia to act very cautiously in the region. And relying on this soft power, Turkey could conduct very productive negotiations with Russia itself — and Azerbaijan as well," he noted.According to the expert, at this point, Azerbaijan does not need that scenario."Azerbaijan needs concrete satisfactions that Russia cannot provide. If Russia were to offer those satisfactions — that is, apologies, appropriate compensation, and other measures — many of the developments we are witnessing now would not be taking place. But then it wouldn’t be Russia. And so, this whole combination of circumstances has led us to the current point in Azerbaijan-Russia relations. Does this mean the situation is irreversible? No, it does not. It means that Russia's current policy is inadequate for the context and the real situation it finds itself in," Semyvolos concluded.
