Economist Vasyl Furman said this on Espreso TV.“What needs to be done to make sanctions truly effective is full energy isolation. The EU must completely stop buying Russian oil and gas, no exceptions. Second, sanctions should target the entire ‘shadow fleet’ and impose secondary sanctions on ports and companies involved in these schemes. Third, there must be a joint strategy between the U.S. and the Group of Seven (G7) countries to decisively lower the price cap on Russian oil,” he said.Furman added that the price cap is currently lowered but needs to be reduced further, with strict control over the effective enforcement of this sanction because it directly hits Russia’s budget revenues.“Fourth, fight circumvention. Implement tough sanctions, possibly trade and financial restrictions, against companies from China, Turkey, and India that do business with Russia. Fifth, real-time monitoring with satellite data, financial intelligence, and a joint group of international experts to oversee sanction enforcement. These must be total sanctions, by the U.S., EU, and all our allies, with strict compliance control. There are already many sanctions; now we must ensure their effective implementation,” the economist concluded. On July 18, European Union ambassadors approved the 18th package of sanctions against Russia.
