This was stated by Koba Nakopia, a former member of the Georgian parliament (2008–2024), in an interview on Espreso TV."In Georgia, unfortunately, no stages of European integration are currently taking place. It is more about disintegration or de-integration. What else can you call it? Every day, the so-called government – and we do not recognize this government as a legitimate one – is increasingly distancing the country from its European path.""In 2024, the elections were stolen from Georgian voters. The results were falsified in the same way as in Belarus," Nakopia noted.According to the former MP, Georgia now has an illegitimate government that is doing everything possible to prevent the country from becoming an EU member. It is not fulfilling the commitments made within the framework of the European integration path. The government is flagrantly violating all possible norms and principles."But most importantly, oligarch Ivanishvili has effectively canceled the essence of elections because no vote matters anymore. The results will be written, rewritten, and presented as legitimate, even though they have nothing to do with the real will of the people," Nakopia emphasized. The former Georgian MP also added that protests have been taking place in Tbilisi for over 230 days on Rustaveli Avenue. Almost every day, the avenue is blocked. Activists from the resistance movement have been arrested, and 51 young activists are currently in Georgian prisons."They are being sentenced to 5–7 years for actions they did not commit. Furthermore, people have been arrested based on forged photoshopped materials. Georgia's judicial system has turned into an entirely uncontrollable tool for repression.""In Georgia, there is a so-called foreign agent law, directly modeled after Russia's. Ivanishvili’s main political opponent, former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, is in prison. You have seen how they are treating him. All the key opposition leaders have been arrested, nearly all opposition leaders are behind bars.""How can we talk about European integration? You saw the latest European Parliament resolution condemning the actions of the current Georgian government. Our partners in the United States have already taken tough measures, imposing sanctions on law enforcement officials involved in the brutal crackdown on demonstrators. The UK joined in these sanctions. As far as I know, the European Union is preparing to do the same. So, all European integration processes are currently frozen," Nakopia stressed. On July 7, it was reported that the ruling party in Tbilisi, Georgian Dream, sent a personal letter of a "threatening and insulting" nature to the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. On July 9, the European Parliament called on the EU to impose sanctions on officials from "Georgian Dream," review the association agreement, and hold new parliamentary elections in Georgia.
