He said this at a press conference with NATO chief Mark Rutte.Trump noted that he had repeatedly offered Putin peaceful solutions, but had not seen any constructive response."Putin is a tough guy," Trump said. "He fooled many. Clinton, Bush, Obama, Biden, and even me. I always hang up and say, ‘Well, that was a nice phone call’, and then missiles are launched into Kyiv or some other city. And after that happens three or four times, you say, the talk doesn’t mean anything" said the U.S. president.Trump said that when he comes home and tells his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, that he had a good conversation with Putin, she replies: "Oh really, another city was just hit.""But we thought we had a deal numerous times. I’d get home, I’d say, first lady, I had the most wonderful talk with Vladimir. I think we’re finished. And then I’ll turn on the television, or she’ll say to me one time, wow, that’s strange, because they just bombed a nursing home.”Trump accused Putin of destroying his own country for the sake of geopolitical ambitions. According to Trump, Moscow is losing more and more, both economically and morally, as a result of the war against Ukraine."We know how Russia's economy is suffering. Putin knows this perfectly well—he is undermining his own economy. So he should think about his country. Because of his ambitions, he has destroyed many countries," Trump said.Trump emphasized that at a certain point, attempts to negotiate must stop and decisive action must be taken: "At a certain point, it becomes clear—enough. We need to act."The U.S. also mentioned the possibility of reaching a peace agreement within 50 days and sent a signal to Putin: "I hope Putin takes this seriously. He knows the deal that could be considered within 50 days, and he knows what fair terms could be. If he does not agree, he will simply be the one who lost."Trump stated that he would introduce secondary tariffs for Russia, which could reach 100%, if a peace agreement with Ukraine is not reached within 50 days.
