Ukrainian MP Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze said this on Espreso TV.“Right now, there is a need to secure support from the United States — as odd as that may sound — because the person best positioned to pressure Orbán is U.S. President Donald Trump. In reality, Orbán is obstructing Trump’s plans for Europe to take greater responsibility for Ukraine, and the EU enlargement process — including Ukraine — is part of that strategy. And his friend and partner Orbán is actively getting in the way. So it would be right to frame the conversation with the U.S. in these terms, to involve them in lifting Hungary’s veto,” Klympush-Tsintsadze emphasized. The MP also noted that there are serious doubts about whether the Hungarian veto can be lifted by the end of the year.“The Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration says the government will do everything possible to complete all screening processes with the European Commission by year-end and be ready to open all clusters. The important thing is that the Commission has allocated additional staff and is demonstrating extraordinary flexibility to ensure the dialogue with Ukraine is intensive and high quality. I hope the assessment will be passed by the end of the year, but there are serious doubts whether the Hungarian veto can be lifted,” she said.Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has suggested that most EU countries would vote against Ukraine’s accession if national referendums were held — similar to the one recently conducted in Hungary.EU official clarified that Hungary’s national consultation on Ukraine’s EU membership carried no legal weight.
