Ukraine’s military intelligence reports that North Korean soldiers are not directly participating in the war against Ukraine on the side of Russian occupiers. This information was provided in response to a request by LIGA.net."Currently, there are no reports of the direct involvement of the North Korean People's Army units in combat actions against Ukraine's Defense Forces," reads the statement. The military intelligence added that the personnel of the North Korean contingent has been withdrawn from the frontline and placed in training camps and field camps, likely in Russia's Kursk region.North Korea's involvement in the war against UkraineNorth Korea’s support for Russian occupiers is mainly manifested in the supply of weapons, including artillery shells, missiles, and reportedly even short-range ballistic missiles. This became particularly evident from the second half of 2023 when Western intelligence and satellite imagery began detecting active cargo movements between North Korea and Russia through the Rajin Port and the Primorsky Krai.In Ukraine, remnants of missiles, which experts believe are modifications of North Korean ballistic systems, have been found. It has also been reported that 122mm and 152mm shells of North Korean production are being used. These often have lower quality but are actively used by Russia due to a shortage of its own munitions. North Korea has become one of Russia's main sources of weapons supply, which seriously complicates Ukraine’s position, especially amid the unstable deliveries of Western aid.On January 11, 2025, it was reported that Ukraine's Defense Forces had captured two North Korean soldiers who were wounded during battles in Russia’s Kursk region. On January 14, South Korea stated that it was ready to retrieve the North Korean soldiers, if the North Korean government requested it.On June 30, North Korean state television publicly aired photos of soldiers fighting on Russia’s side against Ukraine for the first time.
